[101] Character Development 101

Post by Trandafir » Fri Apr 14, 2017 1:01 am

Delfi couldn't help her excitement. It would be her first time teaching a subject and she'd been preparing all week for it. The classroom she'd been assigned to was quite different than her collegues'; it was clean for sure, but small, stuffed with boxes at the back and the amount of chairs didn't seem to be enough for a large group.

"It'll have to do," the small elf sighed, moving towards the white board at one of the classroom's ends. She stood on the tip of her toes to reach higher and started writing down some topics.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT - PROFESSOR DELFI

- Pre RP: Development at the CS stage - exploring the bio.

- Post RP: Socialization - How does it work?

- Post RP: Traumatic experiences - Stepping out of your comfort zone.

Delfi jumped on her feet when she heard the disturbing sound of the door being pushed forward, but her surprised expression was quickly replaced by a kind smile. "Hello there! Make yourself comfortable."

Drew poked his head inside the classroom. "Hi, Professor." He looked around at all the empty seats before entering and sitting at the one closest by the door. He was the first student to arrive... oh well, he supposed he'd better take out his notebook while waiting.

"Good day, class! My name is Delfi and I'm here to help you out with character development in roleplaying." Delfi said, after clapping her hands. She moved towards her board and pointed at the first topic: Pre RP: Development at the CS stage - exploring the bio.

"Let's start with character development while writing a character sheet. A cs is a tool we use to basically inform the other players of your character's story prior to the actual roleplaying. The key part of a CS is the Personality section, that will reveal how your character will react to certain circumstances, and that's where the magic of character development is; because every character/person reacts to something in a different way. But let's not get too ahead of ourselves, shall we? First we need to understand how personalities work." Delfi took her blue marker and wrote the word PERSONALITY on an empty space of the board, with two big arrows leaving that word and pointing to the following: Genetics, Social.

"Even though many things can interfere in someone's personality, the two basic ones are the genetic traits and the social traits." She said, turning back to the class. "The genetic traits are the ones that are always a part of us. For example, if my character named Gary has a father who is a bit of a hothead, some times those traits can pass on to his child, in that case, Gary. Those traits, for building a character are completely random. Meaning that I can have a hot headed character that is hot headed just because. He wasn't moulded to be like that, he was born this way." Delfi looked at Drew and the other NPCs, trying to hide how nervous she felt with a smile. Maybe she wasn't being clear enough, or was dropping too much information at once. "Next we're going to talk about the social traits, and that's where the bio is so important. Any questions so far?"

A girl with her face burred in her scarf walks into the classroom. "H....hi." She said quietly and waved to the teacher and shuffled herself into a chair.

Delfi kept the smile on her face for a long time, waiting for someone to speak up. Anyone. Sadly no one did, but she was happy when someone else joined the class, even though they were late.

"Hi you, have a seat!" The elf exclaimed, not allowing herself to feel down due to the class' lack of participation. Delfi cleared her throat before speaking again.

"Alright, now... Social traits. Social traits are those that our character will learn during their life time. For example, if they are surrounded by love during their childhood or previous years to the roleplay, it's most likely that they'll be more optimistic and cheerful than a character who've had a tough childhood, filled with abuse and misfortune." Delfi said, twisting the marker in between her fingers. "Of course, this isn't a rule, and that's where the biological traits mix up. If your character is born with a tendency to see good in life, they can still remain cheerful no matter how many bad things happen to them over the years."

Delfi moved back to the board, ticking the first topic she had previously written. Next to it she wrote two names, and turned back to the class.

"These are Gary and Mary. Gary is a poor child, the older one of six siblings. His father left when he was at a young age and his mother is an alchoholic. He is the one who had to teach his younger brothers and sisters, send them to school and cook the meals in the house. He doesn't have many friends or has contact with any girls, due to his mind always being filled with the house chores he has to do." Delfi pointed the marker at the second name in the board, allowing a smirk to emerge on her face as she noticed the NPCs paying attention. "This is Mary. She's a single daughter of a couple that always dreamed of having a child. She has many friends in school, including a best friend called Raven who is quite popular, along with Mary. She has dated many boys during her early teenage years, and the saddest time of her life happened when her Hamster died of natural causes." Delfi stepped away from the board, raising her hand that held a marker. "Now a quick exercise. Who wants to try to write a paragraph for Gary's personality?"

Strawberry, from Roleplaying 101, knocks softly on the door before perking her freckled face through. The rest of her body followed when she saw this was the right place and she nodded her thin braided head to the elven professor. "I'm sorry I'm so late Professor, my name is Strawberry."
She shifted her old red book bag farther onto her shoulder and she shifted again under it's weight, even though the bag did not seem that heavy.

Strawberry softly slides into an empty seat and sets the bag behind her, getting out her notebook to write down the contents of the board.

The shy girl slowly raised her hand very hesatently. "I...I.....I w..would like to...to try it miss trant." She said softly with her pale face still deeply tucked in her read scarf as her dark blue hair covered her soft blue eyes slightly. She paused and quickly lowered her hand. "O...only I...if that's ok miss trand." She said sinking down into her chair deeply burying herself in her black fuzzy jacket and threw her hood up which had cat ears on them as if like a child hides under the covers.

As soon as Delfi asked the question, a knock on the door caught her attention. A kind smile emerged on the elf's lips as the girl walked in shily and sat down at one of the empty chairs. "Welcome, Strawberry!" She said, and her smile widened at the sight of a hand being raised. As the girl called her 'Miss Trand', Delfi tilted her head to the side, poking her own cheek with the bottom part of her marker. "I don't know who that Miss Trand is, but sure! Thank you for showing interest!" Delfi was almost skipping as she made her way to the girl with the cat ears, offering her the marker and gesturing towards the board.

Delfi smiled at the girl, a bit troubled as she realized she didn't get her name. "Very good!" She said, taking the pen from the girl's hand and correcting the spelling and ponctuation errors for her.

Personality: Gary is kind of shy and very protective of his family, willing to do anything for them to make them happy. He has a caring heart for others and especially for his family. He is nice, patient, calm and kind, with love and gentleness in his heart.

Bio: Gary is a poor child, the older one of six siblings. His father left when he was at a young age and his mother is an alchoholic. He is the one who had to teach his younger brothers and sisters, send them to school and cook the meals in the house. He doesn't have many friends or has contact with any girls, due to his mind always being filled with the house chores he has to do.

When she finished, Delfi read the content of the board out loud, for everyone to hear. "It is a good start, however it's lacking a very important detail." The elf turned to the board again, taking a bright red marker and writing down a word in capital letters.

FLAWS!

"Your Gary is patient, calm, loving and gentle. Those are great qualities, but a good, well rounded character is not only made of virtues. We want them to feel as human as possible and humans, no matter how nice they are, have flaws. Now I must add that things as 'shy', 'clumsy' and anything cute does not fit as flaws. Those things can make a character annoyingly adorable, but it's not enough to make them believable. Now let's go back to Gary."

Delfi turned around, reading the biography she had written down once again, while poking her own cheek with the end of the marker.

"We know Gary is caring and gentle, because he takes care of his siblings on his own. Family is obviously very important to him. He could be shy, or could simply not feel the need to interact with anyone except for his own household. Both options are possible, though I'd find the later, personally, more interesting. Now for a flaw. Gary's father left and his mother is an alchoholic, incapable of taking care of her own kids. Maybe Gary resents them for it, as he had to give up on his entire childhood to act as a parent for his siblings. Perhaps he hates his parents in a way that every adult or authority figure is bad in his eyes. He could be stubborn and use his attitude as a wall, to protect himself and his siblings from an uncaring world, filled with people who will disappoint them." Delfi turned around and wrote on the board again, next to the personality the girl had written down previously.

Personality: Gary is a boy of few words, often acting shy around people he doesn't know much; those people being basically everyone who isn't one of his many younger siblings. He's always willing to do anything that'd make them happy and is very protective of his family. Even though he doesn't display affection for others, his gentle heart makes him simpatize for those in distress quite easily.

Gary is quite mature for his age, as he grew up having to raise his siblings on his own. He doesn't forgive or forgets easily, holding grundges towards whoever does him or any of his loved ones any harm. Gary has a bit of trouble respecting authority, knowing that most adult figures will most likely let him down at one point. He has learned over the years that you can never expect anything from others, and have a hard time developing trust.

"Alright!" Delfi exclaimed after a sigh, tilting her wrist that was a bit sore from writting too much. "Does anyone have any questions? If not, we can move to Mary!"
