“Ah!” Aki pivoted on her heel, bringing her blade up like a shield. Her blade caught the side of the larva as it flung towards her, a wild hit that managed to knock the larva off-course and send it bouncing across the ground behind her. Aki chased after the monster as it attempted to right itself, stubby legs thrashing at the air as it writhed, the earth smoldering where the spines pressed into it. Aki jabbed her rapier forward, an easy strike on the larva’s unprotected belly. Her gaze was already up and moving even before the larva had shattered, Rugaki had said he had gotten one so that left her with two more.
“Right, I’ll keep close,” Aki responded as Rugaki moved to a fresh stump. If the larva were being drawn in by the sound, then it would stand to reason that it would be a good idea to keep close to him while he hammered away. For as easy as these things were to kill, it was stressful trying to figure out where the next one would be before it spawned in. But, lucky for her, she caught sight of her next target not but two swings into the next stump, a larva she was able to easily dispatch before it had a chance to free itself from the ground.
The eighth appeared as Aki was flicking the dirt off of her blade, the rambunctious pest poking up behind Rugaki’s boot as the boy seemed momentarily preoccupied by some pop-up screen. With a curse under her breath Aki darted across as the larva’s head vanished, however the larva didn’t make a sudden re-emergence as she pulled close. Aki slowed, and as her foot hit the ground, a series of black spikes broke through the earth but an inch away from her toes. She pivoted awkwardly on the balls of her foot, barely able to divert her momentum enough to keep from tripping over herself as she fumbled to the left.
“Cheeky,” she breathed as she rounded back, and thrusted her blade twice into the earth near the spikes, once while it was immobilized, and another while it was attempting to squirm back under the ground out of danger. A text message on the left side of her HUD informed her she had completed the larva quest as she pulled her blade out of the ground.
With a sigh, the slid the sword back into its scabbard. “Yeah, I just finished up here.” She said, “that’s half our quests done, looks like we have a quest to collect some kind of wood and another extermination mission next, but let’s get out of this area before we chat any further.” She said, with her tilt of her head back towards the hills.
