Sub-Zero slowly scanned across the ranks of the others. "I believe I saw him out here then. But I do not see him with the others now..."

It was true- everyone appeared to still be out there, except for Dedede, who was strangely nowhere to be seen.

Aryn gave an annoyed sigh, which almost hurt breathing in given how cold the air was. “He coulda done it then.”

Sub-Zero let out a long sigh. Looking around, her lavender eyes suddenly gained a slightly concerned look. The snow was still falling steadily, and it had built up on the ground quite a bit over time. Sub-Zero's feet were now entirely buried in the snow, and she hadn't even sunk into it all the way due to her light weight.

"This snowfall still has not let up, and is it me, or has it gotten colder?"

“Good Lord, it has,” Aryn replied, immediately noticing it once Sub-Zero mentioned it. He snuggled more into his coat to keep himself warmer. “We should probably look for Dedede.”

The puffball nodded her agreement. I hope the poor Waddle Dees are okay in this... they're already weak to cold as it is. The snow wasn't showing any signs of stopping, and a chilly gust of arctic wind blew across the clearing, making the drop in temperature seem that much more extreme. To Sub-Zero, it was the perfect conditions. But she doubted any of the others would be able to take it so well... with the exception of King Dedede.

"We should look for any footprints before all this snow fills them back in," she suggested, turning her attention back to Aryn. "It's dark out here, but it is still worth checking. They could lead us to Dedede's location fairly easily. Do you see any tracks that could belong to him?"

“That one there,” Aryn replied, beginning to shiver, despite his thicker fur, as he snuggled more into his coat. He pointed to a trail of rather large footprints in the perfect shape of Dedede’s feet leading away from the clearing.

Sub-Zero nodded. "Quickly, let's follow them. Hopefully before he can get much further."

Clutching the prized silver pendant she always wore around her neck in order to try and keep it out of the snow as much as possible, Sub-Zero trudged forward, which took a great amount of effort as her feet were barely above the snow now. But another fierce gust of wind blustered by, and if she struggled to use her wings on a normal basis, Sub-Zero knew there was no chance that she'd be able to fly through such heavy wind. The once-gentle snowfall was gradually becoming a blizzard the more time went by, and the snow kept building up even more on the ground.

Finally, after a bit of tracking the large footprints in the snow, Sub-Zero stopped and looked up. The winds were becoming more and more steady now; the snow falling much more heavily than ever before.

"Do you see him anywhere?" the puffball called to Aryn, doing her best to raise her voice above what had now become an outright snowstorm.

Squinting his eyes, Aryn searched his surroundings, but nothing could be seen because of how thick the snowfall now was. The blizzard proved too much now to handle. “I can’t take this cold anymore, I need to go in!” he called, before he retreated back to the castle’s warm interior.

Another humanoid figure trudged forward past the fox, who didn’t seem to notice them, and after they became closer, their features could be studied more clearly. They were clad in dark black armor, along with a brown cloak that flew along limply behind them from the strong winds that pushed against them. The top of the cloak was pulled up as a hood over their head that managed to stay in place despite the blizzard. Their face was covered with a mask resembling some kind of humanoid alien, likely a Nekkyri... It appeared to be the very same figure that had encountered Sub-Zero just hours ago.

They didn’t seem to mind or even notice the cold at all as they trudged through the snow past the icy Kiridan. They studied Dedede’s footprints and followed them into the snowstorm, likely searching for him as well.

Sub-Zero felt her wings droop as Aryn walked away, but very quickly she noticed the hooded figure walking past him. Observing them with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion, she realized it was exactly the creature she had seen before. The Lurker, she recalled the ominous name that Mel had mentioned earlier.

The mysterious figure appeared to be following Dedede's footprints as well, and just like Sub-Zero, the cold didn't appear to phase them in the slightest. They paid her no mind, simply stalking right past the small knight as they tracked down the trail of footprints left in the snow.

Sub-Zero watched until he was a fair distance away, and then slowly walked behind the figure, following him as he trudged onward while still keeping a fair distance between them. If he was trying to find Dedede as well, then it was possible he could lead her right to the penguin's location.

By Nova, I cannot see a thing.

Meta Knight narrowed his eyes against the snow and wind that rushed toward his face. In the time he had been searching for the cause of the sudden change in temperature, the snowfall had become stronger, until it was a certifiable blizzard. Fierce tempests barreled toward him from all sides, threatening to drive the warrior from the air. He beat his wings strongly, doing his best to fight against the monstrous winds, but the terrible bitter cold they brought with them was almost too much to bear, piercing its ruthless talons right through his wings to the very bone, and making them feel too numb and stiff to fly properly.

Braving the aching pain in his wings and the sting of the cold in his eyes, Meta Knight drove himself onward, unwilling to give up even though the snowstorm was absolutely blinding. He could barely see what was in front of him- and although he'd never admit it to himself, that almost made him a little nervous, for the relentless howl of the cruel winds made it so he could not rely on his sense of hearing to get by either.

He kept flying on the best he could nonetheless, his wings and limbs feeling more numb with each passing second, the dull ache fading into a sharp, stabbing pain. The numbness of his wings was becoming unbearable; he felt like they were made of ice themselves. But it was too late for him to turn back. The castle was far behind him now, he had no idea where he was, and he could not see a thing.

Surely, he had no choice but to keep going.

However, try as he might, the warrior could go on no further.

Unable to take the paralyzing cold any longer, Meta Knight's frostbitten wings finally gave out on him once and for all. He felt unable to move them, unable to even feel them anymore. In fact, he couldn't feel anything at all. His entire body felt numb and cold and sore, consumed by a dreadful layer of ice all over.

How foolish he had been! If only he'd known the snow would rise into such a terrible blizzard, he thought to himself with seething regret, cursing himself over and over inside his mind as he dimly felt himself fall from the air. Further and futher toward the ground, he plummeted. He was so cold, so very very cold. He was so cold and numb that Meta was barely aware of himself finally crashing backfirst into the thick blanket of snow below, busy mentally regretting his unintended act of foolishness, while barely clinging to consciousness at the same time.

The Star Warrior's teeth chattered, his entire body shivering violently, but still he barely felt a thing. Unable to so much as twitch a muscle, all he could do was lay there paralyzed, as blackness crept up on the edges of his vision, and the world around him became fuzzier.

Foolish...

So foolish...

So cold...

He repeated those words inside his mind over and over, until they, too, became far too fuzzy for him to concentrate on any long. The cold and the blackness eventually drowned out his thoughts, drowned out the shuddering of his body and the howling of the storm around him... and the hazy sea of darkness that gradually overtook his mind soon claimed him once and for all, making the world around him go dark and silent and still.

And Meta Knight lay there, unconscious and alone, right beside a trail of large footprints leading through the snow to places unknown in this new barren, snowy world.

The Lurker paid careful attention to the trail of footprints as he braved the now violent blizzard. Luckily Nekkyri armor would hold against even conditions like this. Along his way he wondered why Dedede would want to create such a hazardous storm in a place as warm as this. He gave a small glance to the two long, sharp daggers in their sheaths on his belt as he contemplated.

However a lump in the snow caught his attention and he stopped by Meta Knight’s unconscious, almost dead body.

Kar gre-thokraal bêrë muraanga...

The Lurker stared at the fallen warrior, wondering what to do. He raised his hand, concentrating. A ring of small orange flames blazed around Meta Knight, staying alight even with the extreme conditions. The snow soon began to melt around and inside the ring from the heat, warming him.

He glanced around. Something was off...he could feel it. Someone was following him. With that same piercing stare as before he turned his attention behind him, studying the frozen landscape around him for any other figures.
