{Moon_Mage} Cat & Mouse

She woke up in a sweat, like every night since the night her sister had gone missing. The room was quickly lit up with light as she flipped on the bedside lamp, her eyes darted around the room, waiting for any movement to come from the shadows. None ever did. As she climbed out of the bed, she rubbed her eyes before making her way over to the door, a chair had been pressed up against it, another safety measure along with the dozen of locks she had installed on her front door the same day she had moved in.

Lena Callihill took no chances when it came to her safety, even with a badge and a gun, she still felt safer with her own in place. As she moved down the hallway, and towards the bathroom, she caught sight of the clock in the kitchen on the way, it read 3:30am, which meant she had a few more hours before her first shift as an FBI Agent began.

Two hours later and she was freshly showered and dressed in a navy blue pantsuit, with a black tank top underneath the jacket, tucked into her pants for professionalism, she had left her hair down for today, her short, brown hair stopped just before her shoulders, making it easy for her to maintain.

As she grabbed her phone, badge, gun and keys, she made sure she had everything else packed away in her briefcase before heading out the door, the locks took no time to unlock, before she pulled open the door and headed out to start her day.

Lena arrived at the large building by 6:08am, she felt her nervous as she looked up at it, what if she wasn't as good as the others? Or she screwed up? She shook the negative thoughts away before she moved towards the front doors.

Inside the building was marvelous, she spun around in a 360 as she looked around with a grin, it was a definite upgrade from the police station, she thought as her eyes landed on the huge FBI symbol that layed on the floor.

Lena walked across it, making her way to the front desk and security, she let her briefcase go through the scanner as she showed the lady that sat there her badge, before she was returned the case and sent on her way. She walked to the elevator, and waited for it to come down, as she stepped in, she pressed for the 12th floor, the Criminal Apprehension Unit.

Kyle's alarm pulled him from his sleep to the darkness of the early morning. The digital display flashing 4:55 unit he gave the 'off' button a firm jab. Getting out of bed he shuffled across the room to the light switch carefully avoiding yesterday's clothes on the floor. The morning routine of tooth brushing, hair combing, and loading his pockets went as per usual.

Stepping outside he made sure to lock the door as he discovered that he'd left it unlocked all night. In spite of a lifetime of studying the criminal mind Kyle is abnormally lax with his security. He'd thought on that from time to time and had come to realize that if he were faced with some sort of intruder he'd likely talk them to death trying to understand what makes them tick.

The other thing Kyle was preparing for was the introduction of a new recruit. There was an opportunity for everyone to read her credentials, basically no one but the superiors did. However, thanks to the algorithm he developed Kyle was tasked with running her through the system and as a result he was more familiar with her than most of the crew would be.

On the way in he stopped for doughnuts.

He liked to get in early so that there was time to check his computer and confirm it's operating as it should. While waiting he took to assembling a scull from fragments. While forensic reconstruction wasn't in his wheelhouse the puzzle was a way for him to get the problem solving juices flowing.

Hearing the elevator ding Kyle checked his watch, 6:11, it was too early for most too late for a few. Standing up and positioning the pastery box at the edge of his desk he waited for the doors to open.

Lena was expecting to see the floor buzzing with other agents like herself, but as the doors swung open it revealed an almost empty floor, other then a few people scattered at a desk here and there. Her eyes darted around the room, before they landed on the man, she would have assumed to be the leader of this whole unit, he stood tall, and ready to greet her - which Lena liked, she was here to do work after all, not make friends or get to know people, she had a mission and she was planning to keep her eyes on the prize. Catching the Maze Killer.

As she stepped off the elevator, she straightened up, and fixed her suit jacket, along with the badge that was now clipped to the side of her pants. She moved across the room gracefully, as she came to stand in front of Kyle, she placed a professional smile on her face, it didn't reach her eyes, but it said she was approachable, that's all she needed.

"Agent Lena Callihill at your service,"she said as she stuck a hand out to be shaken.

The smile that spread across Kyle's face was as genuine as any smile could hope to be. Here she was, the new recruit, as bright eyed and bushy tailed as they come. Of course most start like that, then they spend a week on paperwork leaving a healthy ass print in their chair and that fire fades.

Kyle watched the next few moments closely. Good posture. Neat sit jacket, adjusted pre-introduction. Smooth, deliberate steps. Approachable but disingenuous smile, careful and determined. Having gone through the checklist the smile on his face was the projection of his amusement, delight, and admiration. Lena knew how to conduct and present herself to make a powerful impression.

He reached out a hand talking her's in a firm handshake that he knew she'd be insulted to not get. "Agent Kyle Borris, software engineer and I.T. extraordinare. Creator of S.C.A.R.S. or Serial crime analytics recompilation system." He lets go of her hand at the end of his introduction and gestures toward the box on his desk. "Doughnut? The Department Supervisor will be in at 6:17," he bounces his head side to side "or 6:20 if he got in behind the school bus."

Lena looked towards the box of doughnuts before she shook her head,"No thank you,"she said before she looked around with a small nod at his next words. She checked the clock that sat high on the far side wall, as if on cue, the elevator doors dinged and swung open, and in walked an older looking gentlemen who wore a dark, navy blue suit, with his hair slicked back, and his black shoes newly polished.

She assumed this was the Supervisor? As if to confirm her own thoughts, the man walked straight for the two agents,"Agent Borris, I see you've met your new partner, Agent Callihill, welcome to the team,"he addressed each of them, before he got down to business,"unfortunately this morning we don't have time to sit around and get to know each other, you two need to hit the road, a body was found just outside the small town of Jaxson, seems like their saying it looks like the work of a serial killer,"he then moved towards his office,"get to work!"he nodded before disappearing through the doors.

This was new. Most any field assignments went to field agents, and except for a very rare occasion serial murders didn't go to rookies on their first day. Kyle watched the embodiment of no nonsense vanish into his office. "And that's the supervisor. Charming guy, if you like for people to cut the crap." He directs his attention back to Lena, "Which is to say, he's your kinda boss."

Kyle wastes no time moving the box to the coffee station. He was making his way back to her. "Well, you heard the man. Off to Jaxson. Your car or mine?"

Lena liked the supervisor, he was direct and to the point. As she turned and collected her own thoughts, she nodded towards Kyle,"We can take yours,"she had to admit, she wasn't prepared for this, she had at least expected desk work for a while, but who was she to complain? Whoever had pulled these strings for her, was in for a big thank you later though, she thought as she followed Kyle to the elevator.

She stepped on, making room for others to climb on as they went down, once they reached the underground parking lot, she followed Kyle towards his own car.

His car was by no means badass, more of the soccer mom trying to blend in vibe. Kyle retrieved his keys from his pocket hitting the tomorrow start and a gun metal blue Volvo XC90 came alive. "I know, it's not what you expected. Or may it is. Either way I've heard whatever your smartass comment might be before." His words would have sounded annoyed if not for the amused tone.

Getting into the driver's seat he inverted the key and turned the ingnition so they could go. As Lena entered the passenger side door he pressed a button on the center screen causing an alphabetically ordered list of bands and artists to pop-up. "You're the guest, you pick. We've got a long enough drive that the music will be welcome."

Lena felt her lips twitch, sure she was down for business, but she couldn't help but let some of Kyle's easy going personality rub off a little on her, even in the first moments, she was glad she wasn't stuck with a hard ass, as Lena was by no means, one either. As she climbed into the car, she looked around at the floor and interior,"Nicer than mine,"she commented, she wouldn't admit the whole reason for taking his car was that hers was filled with trash still from her long nights of studying at Quantico.

As she pulled on her seatbelt, she looked down at the radio, she loved music but since her sister's death, she didn't spend much time listening or playing it, she had more important things. However she reached over, and turned the volume up slowly,"This alright?"she asked as Old Town Road began to play, she had heard it being played by the younger generation on the streets nowadays and in stores.

"You hear that Bandit? She thinks your nice." Kyle gave the dash of his car a pat like one might do to a dog. It took a moment for the dog to get to a point that he recognized it. "Well, I typically roadtrip to the Beach Boys, or Styx if I'm feeling fiesty, but I can make this work." There was a certain pattern to how he spoke of music. Not totally unlike how a dad might to their teen before a trip somewhere.

He gave Lena a quick sideways glance before returning his attention to the road, but in that brief moment he started a question, "In your time with the police, how many homicides did you work?"
